FINAL PROJECT: STOP MOTION

1/4/19 (Week 1)

We are briefed on our final project in the first week of class. We had to find stop-motion videos online and choose 3 of our favourite ones and explain the reason.

I found best stop motion clips from this website:
https://mashable.com/2010/05/29/stop-motion-videos/#cJSTgpohIqqK

1. Scott Wilson “Too Tired” (Stop Motion with wolf and pig)

I like the idea of how the person uses the camera to shoot movements using collection of photographs and paper-mache pig and wolf boy to make smooth transitions. For example, like how he presents the walking transition, elevator and stairs movement.

2. Western Spaghetti by PES

I like it because the person uses everyday objects to recreate as kitchen tools and ingredients to make the spaghetti. He also creates surreal transitions with the way he compiles his photo shots into a video. He also uses ASMR sound effects to enhance the cooking sound from the way he uses everyday things.

3. Monogrenade: Ce soir

I like it because it is unique in the idea of using non-living things to make up into people and become alive. It also includes the music from the francophone band, Monogrenade into this video. It gives me a creepy feeling while watching it. I like how they kept the monochrome effect for this video.

Later on, we had to write one paragraph on an idea for our final project.

My idea is to present my childhood during a series of illustrations. I plan to show one of my most memorable childhood memory of how I first learned how to ride a bike. The illustrations are simple drawings on paper and shot using a camera/phone continuously. The location will be in my apartment unit.

6/5/19 (Week 6)

We had a choice to work in pairs or individually on our stop motion. So I teamed up with Rachel and came up with two ideas. We listed down each frame and how we are going to execute for each frame. We heard that each second is 24 frames to make it smoother when it is being editing as a video.

Idea 1: Surrealism (a person who transform into a bird)

Shot 18: Hits its head on the door
Shot 19: Falls to the floor
Shot 20: Alarm rings
Shot 21: Wakes up (in bed)
Shot 22: Expression of “what on earth happen”

Idea 2: Homesickness (a person who carves for their home country food)

Shot 1: Person walking through the garden
Shot 2: [Change to apartment scene] western news/movie playing

13/5/19 (Week 7)

For this week, we chose to go ahead with Idea 2 but we modified the idea further. We even discuss the clothing, food and equipment that we will use for the filming.

Here is the link of our finalized idea:

20/5/19 (Week 8)

During the weekends, we went to both of the garden locations to see which fits the western surroundings. We took some photos to compare and choose which is suitable for the location of the walking scene.

After that, we were asked to write our idea/concept, storyboard, references (from stop-motion videos online),  production timeline and trial shooting (if possible) using google slides.

27/5/19 (Week 9)

After the feedback given last week, we need to modify our idea further. Rachel and I did a storyboard of our modified idea so that we could illustrate and visualize how the scenes would be like.

3/6/19 (Week 10)

We prepared the props and equipment for our stop motion filming that we planned to do the following week.

10/6/19 (Week 11)

We did the filming this week at Rachel's apartment with all the scenes. Here is some scenes compile together to show our progress and outcome.

And we had to edit the scenes we film and show it in the next class as the first draft screening.

17/6/19 (Week 12)

After getting feedback, we had to include more stop motion elements so we made another idea but using the same storyline to make it look like a stop-motion.

Here is the attached document of our modified idea:

On thursday, we shot our modified stop motion idea in the studio using the green screen for the window scene and the travelling scenes. After that, we continued to shoot the Western and Malaysian food scenes.

Here are some photos taken for both of these scenes.

After that, we added our modified idea to our previous slides. Here is the final slides of our stop motion idea and progress.

24/6/19 (Week 13)

This week, Rachel and I continued to edit and compile the photos for each scene in Premiere Pro and the ones with the green screen in After Effects.

Fig 1.11 Progress of removing green screen and replacing with a background clip in After Effects:  Travelling scenes

After that, we adjusted the size of each scene to 1080p as our frame of our scenes is too small and then we continued to do the colour correction for each scene in Premiere Pro.

1/7/19 (Week 14)

After editing the scenes with the correct colour and effects, we moved on to searching for sound clips for the actions, ambiance and background music in Youtube, Freesound.org and many other sound applications/websites.

We edited the sounds in Adobe Audition. To match the sounds with each scene, we adjusted them using the volume.

After receiving feedback, we had to amend some scenes and retake new ones to present and know an easier understanding of our storyline. We filmed some shots of the person's expression when eating and travelling scenes in the studio.

Mr. Martin also suggest to add the title of our stop motion in the beginning to tell the audience what this stop motion is about.

We also updated our final modified idea into a new set of slides as well. Here is our final proposal of our stop motion idea.

After completing all the scenes, we compiled them together and upload it to YouTube. Here is our embedded final video.

FEEDBACK

13/5/19 (Week 7)

Specific feedback: In regards to our idea for our stop motion, Mr.Martin commented that the execution should be considered for idea 1 like how to get the bird feathers and make the person look like a bird. For the second idea, he said that there should be more exciting and the location of cafe is not a very good idea as we need to think how to present a cafe in a foreign country. He recommended maybe using a countryside environment and apartment with western type of ambiance to show that the person is in a foreign country at the start.

20/5/19 (Week 8)

There is no feedback given this week.

27/5/19 (Week 9)

Specific feedback: Mr. Martin told us to add more scenes to the story line as it only looks like a 30 seconds stop motion. He suggested that we can add a twist ending like the character abuses her wish/dream and travels to other places and gets stuck there in reality. Mr. Razif advised us to add more stop motion elements or else it may look like a regular video production rather than a stop motion.

3/6/19 (Week 10)

There is no feedback this week as it was an e-learning week.

10/6/19 (Week 11)

Specific feedback: Mr. Martin told us to remember to do a trial shoot first to see how the scene will look like before filming the actual stop motion.

17/6/19 (Week 12)

Specific feedback: Mr. Razif said to include some stop motion effects because right now it looks like a video with some frames being taken out. For the audio, it should include the background sound, action sound effects like the plates & cutlery.

24/6/19 (Week 13)

We did not receive any feedback this week.

1/7/19 (Week 14)
